Today Matilda class were very excited to come to Forest School on the minibus. We went to Hunsbury Hill Country Park and the children were set the challenge to make a shelter or a small den.
First we all talked together about how to build a den and safely move and place large logs and branches. The children all worked together really well in friendship groups, and soon had basic frames up to form the structure of their shelters.
Once the shelters were built, we discussed how we could improve them, either by adding more sticks to fill the gaps or by making them more waterproof or cosy inside. Some children decided to use the tarpaulin sheets to help, and placed these either on the floor to sit or lie on, or on the sides of their shelters to stop the wind and rain.
The children all thought of different uses for their shelters, some becoming homes, whilst others were stages for musical performances! At the end of the afternoon some children wanted to perform to the others, playing their musical instruments made in the woods and singing their favourite songs from their dens which provided a stage.
Well done Matilda class, what a fun and creative afternoon at Forest School!
